Tuesday, January 17, 2012 62nd CONGREGATION The Principal, College of Computing and Information Science to present the following for the Conferment of the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Information Science) Kaddu Sarah Birungi Ms Kaddu’s research focused on the contribution of ICTs to the access and utilisation of agricultural information by the rural women in selected districts of Uganda.

The study sought to establish the rural women’s agriculture needs; the readiness of ICTs application in the access and utilisation of agricultural information by the rural women in Uganda; the challenges faced by the rural women and ICTs providers; and proposing a model for effective access and utilisation of agricultural information by the rural women in Uganda. The findings of the study included: the rural women agricultural information needs; the existence of ICTs infrastructure for access and utilisation of agricultural information by the rural women in some places but not others in Uganda; good practices of ICTs application in developing countries and a developed country; and challenges in accessing agricultural information through ICTs by the rural women in Uganda.

The study recommends the establishment of ” A Rural information System (URAIS)”, a strategic model for effective access and utilisation of agricultural information by the rural women in Uganda. Mukungu’s research focused on developing strategies for enhancing information literacy (IL) among university graduates in Uganda.

The study was carried out among graduates from four universities – Makerere University, Mbarara University of Science and Technology, Uganda Martyrs University – Nkozi, and Islamic University in Uganda.The findings showed that there were no formal IL programmes in the universities under study at the time of the study.
